July 2 - Madrid

The flight ran on time and two meals were served and the in flight entertainment was good - however, no matter how you cut it - an 8 and a half hour red eye on which I did not sleep was a LONG flight.

We arrived in Madrid at around noon and cruised through immigration and customs.   The weather is beautiful and we made it to our hotel around 1:30 or so.

After a few false starts, we managed to ride a bus and take a subway train to the city center.  There were lots of food choices, including Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, and Starbucks that we didn't choose.  Since it was about 5 pm Madrid time, it was about 11 am Miami time - Albert had eaten breakfast on the plane (I opted out) and I had eaten part of the late dinner meal on the plane (Albert had opted out) - neither one of us really knew whether it was lunch time, early dinner time, or what.  I suggested perhaps we just eat dessert and call it good - I mean there was plenty to choose from....
But we went for empanadillas and empanadas instead.
We walked around for a while - got some ideas for what we want to see more of tomorrow.  In addition to the beautiful buildings and statues, there we lots of small vendors, some protesters, and lots of buskers like this guy posing with a skateboard on his feet "holding" himself up on one hand.
It was a very lively downtown scene - especially for a Monday afternoon.  We made our way back to the hotel using the public transportation and are planning to be in bed by 10.  Tomorrow a full day in Madrid.
