November 12 - What is Happening?

When we first arrived in Sevilla, we spent quite a bit of time just figuring out how to get the basics.  Where do we take the trash?  When is the grocery store open and where is it?  How do I enroll in language school?

But, lets face it - we don't just want to survive this year, we want to take in the city.  But, there is no such thing as one stop shopping to figure out what is happening where and when.  Luckily, we have a great landlady that sends informative e-mails keeping us posted about big things.  And, of course we have found a few websites that have things on them - lots of the theaters have their own websites which I try to check regularly.  And more than once we have heard about something from one of the other students or teachers at my school.  But more than anything, I stop and read everything I see posted around the city - sometimes snapping a picture to look for details online when I get home.

For monuments and famous buildings, there are street signs with walking times...

Lots of walls have posters glued onto them and the no longer in use telephone kiosks all have posters on top of posters.  Sadly, nobody ever takes them down - so it is not uncommon to see a sign for a cool event that has already passed.

Of course there are more professional signs - some for single events and some with calendars of events.

And if you are lucky (get it, horseshoe), you will find out about something just by walking down the sidewalk.  I couldn't figure out why this horseshoe was placed across the sidewalk, so I went home and looked it up.  Turns out there is a big horse competition going on at the fairgrounds this week.  Each day ends with a "show".  So, I bought tickets for Thursday evening.  Of course, first we have to figure out how to get out to the fairgrounds....luckily it looks like we can get there on a local bus - it would be a LONG walk.

Of course if you happen to miss a big event, you might be able to find a recreation of the event with hundreds of small statues...well, maybe this doesn't happen that often, but I did find this display celebrating the procession from last weekend.
