September 15 - No Procession

Today started a little earlier than usual for me  - I watched a live stream on the computer of the first Whitman College conference volleyball match of the season.  It started at the normal hour of 7pm Friday night in Walla Walla, but that was 4am our time.  They won in a 5 set nailbiter.  I did take a nap later - but, I don't think I will be getting up tomorrow at 2am to watch match two.

It was bright and sunny today with only a slight chance of rain this evening.  So, Albert and I headed out to lunch since our evening plans last night were dampened by the thunderstorms.  We ate in a lovely Mexican restaurant near the cathedral.  Beautiful location, good food, and a handsome date.

This evening, just as the procession was due to start (at around 7:15) the small chance of rain turned into 100% chance of rain.  With rain and lightning in the air, the procession was postponed until after 8:30pm mass.  Sadly, by 9:30 it was still raining and the radar didn't look good.  So the procession....
was cancelled.  All of the work of hanging decorations will need to be cleaned up - without the reward of a beautiful procession.    They did have a celebration in the church complete with a band...but I am sure there are lots of disappointed folks.

I went out for a short walk around the neighborhood and found these gentlemen sweeping up the thousands of wet flower petals outside the church by the box fulls.

Although the procession was cancelled and the many outdoor cafes suffered a second night of patrons crammed into indoor spaces, the neighborhood still looked beautiful....even if a little wet.
